Speak, by Laurie Halse Anderson

While perusing reader reviews of this amazing YA novels, I wondered: Do people ever call male protagonists "whiny"?

  1. well, this example is from film, not literature, but luke skywalker (in the first installment of the Star Wars saga, episode IV) is celebrated as being the whiniest creature ever. "But I was going to go to Tashi Station to pick up some power converterrrrrs!" he's horribly whiny. like, smack him on the TEEF whiny.

that said, a quick mental review leads me to believe that in storytelling female protagonists are far more likely to be labled whiny.

  2. Yes on "far more likely." And also, in Star Wars, Luke IS actually whining at that point . . . showing how he is a normal, annoying teenager, which makes the sudden murder of his family and the uprooting of his life all the more poignant.
